Clinical Nurse Specialist Valley Children's Hospital is seeking 2 Clinical Nurse Specialists to join the Patient Care team. Current openings are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Explorer Unit (post surgical inpatient stay). Based in Madera, CA, and ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best childrens hospitals in the country in seven pediatric specialties and recently named one of the Nations top childrens Hospitals by The Leapfrog Group, Valley Childrens has been open for nearly 70 years. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who functions in the role of expert clinician, educator, leader, consultant and researcher. In collaboration with the healthcare team, the CNS monitors the clinical care of patients and provides clinical support to improve patient care and outcomes. With in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience in a nursing specialty, the CNS sphere of influence includes the care of the patient/family, practice of nursing and providing solutions for complex systems and processes. The CNS serves as a role model, patient advocate, charge agent, and leader to enhance patient care. This position practices within the scope of the California Nursing Practices Act and in accordance with Valley Children's policies.
About Explorer Unit: This unit is a 36-bed, acute care unit with a patient population comprised primarily of surgical patients. The unit additionally has the ability to take 16 monitored beds for more critical patients. The unit received transfers from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and/or Post Anesthesia Care Unit when a patients condition is a surgical one. This includes cardiac surgery, trauma, neurosurgery, and orthopedic patients. The premature infant whose condition is stable enough to leave the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit may also be a patient on Explorer. Explorer is also occasionally an overflow area for the acute medical unit. The age range on Explorer is newborn to eighteen years with an average length of stay of four days.
About the NICU: Ranked as one of the best childrens hospitals in Neonatology by U.S. News & World Report Valley Childrens NICU offers the most comprehensive array of services for critically ill newborns to ensure the best possible quality of life. Valley Childrens main Hospital campus in Madera provides Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) support - the highest level of care available for neonates and infants. Valley Childrens supports a network of NICUs throughout Central California, providing the opportunity for families with critically ill babies to receive treatment closer to home throughout his or her entire stay.
Requirements for Explorer

  • Master's Degree in Nursing required
  • Valid CA RN license AND CNS license required
  • Other National certification(s) preferred
  • BLS HeartCode required within30 days of hire or transfer into position
  • Experience and expertise in clinical nursing specialty required
  • Minimum three (3) years clinical area experience
  • Minimum five (5) years increasingly responsible experience which demonstrates proficiency in the skills and knowledge required to perform the job preferred
    Requirements for NICU
    • Master's Degree in Nursing required
    • Valid CA RN license AND CNS license required
    • Experience and expertise in NICU required
    • Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse (NCC) or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) required
    • BLS HeartCode required within 30 days and NRP required within six (6) months of hire or transfer into position
    • Minimum three (3) years clinical area experience
    • Minimum five (5) years increasingly responsible experience which demonstrates proficiency in the skills and knowledge required to perform the preferred
