Job Description Job Description Description: Summary/objective As an Emergency Room Technician, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality emergency care and support to patients in a fast-paced critical access hospital. Under the supervision of registered nurses and providers, you will perform essential clinical procedures, assist in emergency response efforts, and ensure the safe transport and monitoring of patients. Your responsibilities will include documenting care activities, maintain equipment, and adhering to safety protocols. You will work collaboratively with the healthcare team, providing compassionate patient advocacy and support while continuously enhancing your skills and knowledge in emergency medical care. Your dedication and expertise will contribute significantly to the efficiency and effectiveness of the emergency department, ensuring patients receive timely and appropriate care Requirements: Essential Functions Patient Care: · Provide basic life support and emergency care to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or Provider.· Perform assessments within EMT/CNA scope of practice, vital signs, and documenting findings accurately.· Prioritize patient care based on the severity of conditions. Clinical Procedures: · Assist in various clinical procedures, including wound care, splinting, and casting.· Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and specimen collection for laboratory testing. Emergency Response: · Respond promptly to emergency situations within the hospital, providing immediate care and support.· Assist in resuscitation efforts, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Patient Transport: · Safely transport patients within the hospital, ensuring continuous monitoring and care during transit.· Assist with the transfer of patients to and from stretchers, beds, and wheelchairs. Equipment and Supplies: · Ensure the availability and functionality of emergency equipment and supplies.· Sterilize and maintain medical instruments and equipment according to established protocols.· Monitor inventory levels and restock supplies as needed. Documentation and Communication: · Accurately document patient care activities, observations, and interventions in medical records.· Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, patients, and families.· Relay critical information to RNs, Providers, and other healthcare professionals promptly. Safety and Compliance: · Adhere to infection control protocols and safety standards to prevent the spread of infection.· Comply with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.· Participate in continuous education and training programs to stay updated with current practices. Patient Advocacy and Support: · Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families. Team Collaboration: · Work collaboratively with the healthcare team to provide high-quality, patient-centered care.· Participate in team meetings, case discussions, and quality improvement initiatives. Professional Development:· Preferred EMT certification, CNA accepted and complete required continuing education.· Stay informed about advancements in emergency care and integrate new knowledge into practice. Clinical Knowledge and Skills: · Proficient in basic life support (BLS) and emergency medical procedures.· Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.· Ability to perform clinical tasks within EMT scope of practice such as EKGs, splinting, wound care, etc. as assigned. Critical Thinking: · Strong problem-solving skills to assess and respond to patient needs effectively.· Ability to prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment.· Quick decision-making skills in emergency situations. Communication: · Excellent verbal and written communication skills.· Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.· Proficiency in documenting patient care accurately. Teamwork and Collaboration: · Ability to work collaboratively with nurses, providers, and other healthcare professionals.· Strong interpersonal skills to foster a positive and cooperative work environment.· Willingness to assist and support team members as needed. Compassion and Patient Advocacy: · Empathy and compassion in providing patient care and support.· Advocacy for patient needs and comfort.· Ability to provide emotional support to patients and families during stressful situations. Technical Proficiency: · Skilled in the use and maintenance of medical equipment and instruments.· Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.· Ability to manage and restock medical supplies efficiently.· Regular use of advanced medical equipment and technology, such as monitors, and diagnostic tools. Attention to Detail: · Precision in performing clinical procedures and documenting patient information.· Ability to follow protocols and guidelines accurately.· Vigilance in monitoring patient conditions and identifying changes. Adaptability and Resilience: · Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and patient needs.· Resilience to handle the emotional and physical demands of the job.· Ability to remain calm and composed in high-stress environments. Supervisory responsibilities: Mentorship and Training: · Assist in the orientation and training of new ER Technicians and other support staff.· Provide guidance and support to junior staff members, helping them understand procedures and protocols. Work environment: Fast Paced and Dynamic: · The emergency room operates in a high-energy, fast-paced setting that requires quick thinking and efficient action.· Technicians must be prepared to manage multiple tasks and patients simultaneously. High-Stress and High-Pressure: · The ER environment involves dealing with acute medical emergencies and trauma cases, often under significant time constraints.· The ability to stay calm and composed in high-pressure situations is essential. 24/7 Operation: · The emergency room functions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends, and holidays.· ER Technicians must be flexible with their schedules and prepared for shift work, including long hours. Team-Oriented: · ER Technicians work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including nurses, providers, and other support staff.· Strong communication and teamwork skills are vital for effective patient care. Exposure to Health Risks: · Potential exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and hazardous materials.· Strict adherence to infection control protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Emotionally Challenging: · Frequent interaction with patients and their families during emergencies requires compassion and empathy.· Providing emotional support to patients and families in distressing situations. Regulated and Compliant: · Adherence to hospital policies, healthcare regulations, and ethical standards.· Participation in ongoing training and continuing education to stay current with best practices and protocols. Physical demands:· The role involves extensive physical activity, such as standing for extended periods, lifting and moving patients, and performing repetitive tasks.· Requires good manual dexterity and physical stamina. Travel required: Required education and experience: Current EMT/CNA certification Current AHA BLS certification High School Graduate or equivalent Preferred education and experience: Previous experience working in an emergency room or acute care setting preferred. 1-2 years of experience as an EMT/CNA or similar role in a healthcare environment. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred but not required. Pediatric Cardiac Life Support (PALS) certification preferred but not required.
